How do I find a file on my Mac when I don't remember its name?
Search by what is inside it or what it was about. Spotlight and Finder can match words inside many documents, but only the exact words. A meaning search tool like Trawl lets you describe the file ("the lease agreement for the Grand Baie flat") and finds it even if none of those words are in the name.
The built-in way (free)
- Press ⌘ Space and type a word you are sure is inside the file.
- In Finder press ⌘ F, set the search to "Contents" and narrow it with Kind and Last opened date.
- Check Finder > Recents if you used it in the last days.
With Trawl
- Press ⌥ Space and describe the file in your own words.
- Turn the time dial to Week or Month if you know roughly when.
- Press Tab to preview, ↵ to open.

Not with Spotlight. Trawl adds meaning search that runs on your Mac.
Describe it. Trawl finds it.
