Why is Spotlight not finding my files?

Usually the Spotlight index is incomplete, the folder is excluded in System Settings > Spotlight, the file type is not indexed, or you are not typing the exact word. Rebuilding the index helps with the first two. For searching by meaning or in places Spotlight skips, use a separate search tool like Trawl.

The built-in way (free)

1. Check System Settings > Spotlight and the Search Privacy list for excluded folders.
2. Rebuild the index: in Terminal run sudo mdutil -E /.
3. Try fewer, exact words.

With Trawl

1. Trawl keeps its own index and does not depend on Spotlight.
2. Describe the file instead of guessing its exact words.
